Well looking at it now [1], all we need is Google and Apple to do a rss-extension and I will have a full house :)

 

Personally I think the SLE Spec is not bad on the face of things. I would have preferred a more OPML type system but there's lots of scope for combining OPML with RSS in to the future.

 

Could the BBC use SLE or any other rss-extension? Well yes and I do believe so plus we are using the media yahoo stuff elsewhere, already?

The World Service RSS 1.0 feeds already contain the Dublin core metadata module [2], a Syndication module [3] and a copyright licence module [4] which we have not used yet.

 

Right from the first day of considering which RSS version we thought about extensions and modules and how they could help developers build even more interesting concepts and prototypes. Adding SLE or anything else seems like a logical move as long as it does not an affect on casual RSS reading or move RSS into the world of X/HTML.

 

I'm sure like many of these things, we will offer it to syndication partners first then the public as the software takes advantage of the extensions/modules.

As you will all know by now, Microsoft released the details of their "Simple List Extension Specification" over the weekend, as part of their bigger set of RSS-in-Longhorn announcements.

As a content distributor, we'd certainly like to know what your views are on the specification.  Clearly, we will need to start deciding whether it's something we want to offer in our feeds (where relevant/beneficial).

So, to start the ball rolling, here's some specific questions to think about (or just reply back with your general views):

* What do you think of the Simple List Extension Spec?
* If we started producing feeds which included Simple List Extension tags, would you use them (both in terms of your interest in using them, and having compatible parsers, etc, to pull out the relevant information)?

* If not, why not?
* Are there any feeds you would like to see them added to - either existing backstage.bbc feeds or feeds we are likely to implement in the future?
