The downloads are the podcasts of selected radio shows, you can use software like iPodder (http://ipodder.sourceforge.net) to get the podcast to your PC, then you can transfer the mp3 to your player.
As for the programmes you can get via the radio player, it is possible to download these if you look at the html on the bbc site and work things out, but it is a hassle (code has been written by some people to do this automatically - but may not be available, see past posts), plus you need to then convert the ra file to mp3 adding more hassle. I have the added problem of converting the mp3 to another format so I can listen on my minidisc player (I hate sony software). I know the Radio Player, for on-demand streaming, but where do you download? Is that different from the podcasting trial, which applies only to a few programs? I have an MP3 Player, but it is not an iPod, hence no iTunes for me... I bought a 20GB iaudio X5 (Cowon) because it has line-in recording, microphone, FM tuner you can record from, multiple music formats, etc. (It also can show photos and movies, but not very well & one shouldn't buy it if movies and photos are important-- buy the new iPod in that case...) Also, you don't bneed special software to manage the files -- they appear as a drive in the usual way, through the USB connection, and so it is easy to organize the files and you can use it to store any kind of computer file. I wanted to convert my old music collection (on tapes, CDs, and even reecords) rather than to buy a whole new collection. The iPod business model requirtes you to repurchase a lot of music, at least everything you don't have on CD. And I also need to recrod live events & sounds for my multimedia and to record the radio (AM through the line-in, FM directly on t player, althugh maybe my stereo gets better reception). I am not advertising the player I bought, though-- for one thing, its screen cracked and I don't know how, and they don't have very good suppport and repair services... But the music quality is good, as is teh feature set. - Sent via the backstage.bbc.co.uk discussion group. To unsubscribe, please visit http://backstage.bbc.co.uk/archives/2005/01/mailing_list.html.
