Hello everyone,

We have recently produced an XForms application that overlays data
from a BBC public transport information feed onto a Google Map of the
UK. The application actually came about as the subject of a tutorial
[1] that we were writing for our developer site. However, we think it
is worth sharing with a wider audence since it demonstrates very
clearly the suitability of the XForms model for driving this type of
application. The application also represents a good starting point for
anyone else considering using XForms in this area, because it can be
very easily amended to utilise any feed that contains
latitude/longitude data (both tpegML and RSS).

One of the main benefits that XForms brings to the application is its
clean separation between the model and the view. In fact, in this
case, the view contains no XForms UI controls at all, as that is
handled by Google Maps. The XForms model provides a concise,
declarative syntax with which to define the feed request, the form
actions and the data store.

To enable the application to run free-standing on your desktop, it
targets our Sidewinder Viewer [2] software and our formsPlayer XForms
processor [3]; these are both available as free downloads from our
developer site. Once you have these installed, the application can be
run by navigating to it in your browser; it is available in our public
SVN repository [4]. We've also uploaded a screenshot [5] of the
running application to flickr, in case anyone would like to take a
look.

Regards,
Phil.
