Can I just ask, when exactly did the BBC get an opt out from the equal
opportunities legislation?  I thought the law provided that jobs should be
advertised freely and be open to all candidates.

It has been my target to apply for and get Ashley's job when he stood down
for quite a few years now.

The does indeed seem to be a glass ceiling!
