Well, I'm not trying to give the folks who pay my wage a get-out-of-jail-free pass on the mobile site, and I still use AvantGo on a Palm T3, which should say something. Waiting for a reasonable PAYG data tarriff, although Orange appears to have rolled one out yesterday.
But, an easy way to take the non-optimised sites for mobile is to run it through Google Mobile (http://www.google.com/gwt/n) or Sweezer.net. Popurls.mobi automatically appends the Google Mobile URL to any site.
