Flash’s abysmal video decoder is a longstanding bone of contention amongst those in the know. It’s even worse on non-Windows platforms. I have a G4 Mac Mini here which can play back downloaded iPlayer HD streams via QuickTime’s decoder, with no dropped frames. In contrast, it can’t even manage to play back iPlayer SD streams via Flash without skipping. (Personally, I use get_iplayer primarily so that I can watch iPlayer content on the devices of my choosing, which are rarely PCs or Macs; if I couldn’t do that, I’d grab DVB streams OTA instead).
