Hi, I've noticed there's some talk about tape archiving. As mentioned below I'd love to help to improve archiving over multiple volumes using a tape autoloader. I bought Dell PV 124T autoloader and it works fine using tar, mt and mtx. I've been looking into BackupPC scripts to add --multi-volume option to the script with tar command. tar would usually stop and wait when a tape is full and wait for another one. At the moment I don't know how to capture when tar is waiting for another tape. Script would then change the tape and let tar continue. Would anyone have any ideas? Unfortunately I don't really know Perl and at the moment I can't afford time to learn it that well so any help would be appreciated. :-) Also, since most autoloaders now have barcode readers I'm looking into adding that info to the archive log. It's very easy to get it from output of mtx.
I'm aware that there are other tools for tape backup such as Amanda etc. I don't need tape backup just a good archive option as I use tapes to store only current snapshots of backups so Amanda for example would be too much. I'm looking at these ones: > Quantum SuperLoader 3 - LTO-3, Tandberg StorageLoader 1U LTO3, HP 1/8 > Ultrium 920 G2 Tape Autoloader, Dell PV 124T Rack Base LTO3 2U Autoloader. > > --- The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material.
