Just upgraded to 2.1.1-2 and that seems to have fixed it. I am running BackupPC_nightly and it seems to be removing directories this time.

Can I just remove older backups by hand then with out mucking it up. I was concerned because it keeps a record of the older backups in the backups file. I would like to

rm -rf 102 XferLOG.102.z

You also need to remove the corresponding line from the
backups file (the one that starts with "102").

That said, BackupPC should respect the new expiry numbers.
What version are you running? There was a bug that prevented
expiry from working when the disk was too full, but that has
been fixed. Now, even if new backups cannot start, expiry
should still be done once per day.
