Yes, I've seen the same here -- backuppc box is debian/sarge with 

ii  rsync          2.6.4-6        fast remote file copy program (like rcp)
ii  backuppc       2.1.1-2sarge1  high-performance, enterprise-grade system fo
ii  libfile-rsyncp 0.52-1         A perl based implementation of an Rsync clie

failing backed-up box was running rsync 2.6.7-1, works fine after a
downgrade to 2.6.4-6.

the backed-up box has multiple filesystems, ran thru / (100MB, ~8.8k
files), and /boot (11MB, 44 files) just fine, failed at /home (15GB,
~91k files).
