I'm guessing you are using --hard-links in $Conf{RsyncArgs}
with BackupPC 2.1.2pl2 or earlier. Is that correct?
If so, hardlink support with rsync is available in BackupPC 3.0.0beta
and is not supported in 2.x. You should either remove --hard-links
or upgrade to 3.x.
If not, then please tell me which versions of File-RsyncP and BackupPC
you are using.
