When you say "I've copied ntbackup to XP home", I assume you did not
know that an installation image exists on the XP Home CD in
valueadd\msft\ntbackup.

Also, there is, or was anyway, a version of rsync floating around
patched to support VSS. I grabbed one a while back and used it to
successfully back up open files on Windows XP Pro and Home machines,
including .PST files while Outlook was running. Unfortunately, there
were questions regarding the distribution of that particular binary
along with the support libraries it required. I have not been able to
locate it recently.

CYGWIN.DLL has recently included support for the VSS device namespace
used by VSS. I have not yet gotten around to investigating it
further.
