There are packages in the open source community for doing that. (as evidenced
by mail2forum.com, pity they use phpbb as their forum.)

I think that forums are in general a bad idea for software projects for two
reasons - Unlike mailing lists - forums require that you visit, you must make
a conscious decision to do something, where as a mailing list is a one time
subscription and thereafter every message is pushed to me. Especially bad
given that you have to create yet another password. Too much hassle, email is
already very good at that.

Very few places do forums well - Ubuntu does (but I think they mirror to their
mailing lists as well) Forums tend to attract end users more than sysadmins
(which is what I think the target audience of BackupPC is)

Forums tend to generate less participation. If I could have used a forum to
solve my initial hurdles with backuppc, I would only visit the forums when I
had a problem, and thus wouldn't be reading this thread or participating.
(Not that I participate much)

A wiki on the other hand would be great - esp if we could get someone
dedicated to going through the mailing list and pulling out nuggets and
creating wiki content from it.
