Thanks for you response. I checked my dmesg logs and didn't see anything 
related to the network going down. In any case, I'd be surprised if this was 
the error for two reasons:

1) The network, except for perhaps lo, shouldn't be involved in this error, 
because this is from the localhost, i.e. the backuppc server backing itself up.

2) If the network were going down regularly, then running rsync manually to the 
networked clients should have also failed, unless I just happened to get lucky 
only when running rsync manually and never when running BackupPC_dump.

If there's an error in my logic, please let me know. Otherwise, other 
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That looks to me like your network is going down.  Did your new
motherboard change include changing NICs?  If so, perhaps there is a
problem with either your NIC or the driver for it in your kernel version.

If you are on linux, I'd check the output of dmesg for related errors, or
otherwise try a spare NIC that is known to work with your
hardware/software.
