I spend 90% of my time in xterms too, mostly logged into a bunch of
different machines, but the way I do it now is to keep a desktop running
in freenx and connect via NX from wherever I am. It is as fast as X
locally and not at all bad remotely - and you get instant access to
whatever you left running when you reconnect so you can leave a browser
session with backuppc up too. It takes a while for your first screen to
redraw remotely but after that, everything is snappy. It's well worth
the time to set it up and especially worthwhile if you regularly need
access to your linux desktop from windows or mac boxes since the client
is cross-platform.
