many thanks, craig. somehow i overlooked this response until
today, and in my earlier testing, i hadn't added '--hard-links'.
i hadn't yet had time to debug my lack hard links, so i'm glad i
found your reply.
perhaps '--hard-links' should be in the default value of
RsyncArgs and RsyncRestoreArgs? this would be a change in
"historic" behavior, but it would make rsync and tar more equivalent.
or, at the least, perhaps '--hard-links' should be mentioned in
the comments adjacent to the RsyncArgs values. (while i'm at
it: "--one-file-system" should probably be mentioned right
adjacent as well -- it's discussed in other places, but not right
there.)
and while i'm really at it: another bit of text that could be
fixed is the FAQ/RoadMap. i've since found that the top of the
FAQ says it's been replaced by the wiki, but since it's indexed
by google, one can easily end up on a sub-page, which may have
out of date information (like "hard-links aren't supported").)

you've made me curious -- once the files and metadata are in the pool,
what's the difference between files (or, rather, hard links) backed
up by tar vs. rsync?
again, many thanks for all of the hard, and excellent, work that's
gone into backuppc.
