if it's swapping, that'll max out iowait really fast. get more memory.
Backuppc is I/O bound in many cases. Faster disk is definitely a good idea.
avoid RAID 5 and go to RAID 10 if you can (or is it RAID 0+1 that's
better?). Definitely go with a 3ware card tho; they're 10x easier to manage
than any other RAID card I've worked with.
