maybe try just backing up a few Gigs or so instead of everything you are
trying now.  see if the whole process completes correctly.  then gradually
increase size of backups...it seems you must be over-extending something on
the system if you bring the whole machine down.  Or you have a hardware
problem that just has a low enough probability that you only see it under
heavy loading over a long time.  Could be disk/controller issue instead of
CPU overheat as was suggested earlier.  Keep an eye on all the file systems
as things are running - maybe a tmp or var directory is filling the
filesystem?
good luck - hardware problems are, uh, hard.  But I agree with rest of
discussion that it is less likely to be a specific backuppc bug/config
problem if the whole machine is dying.  BTW i am not a developer just a user
so really the above is about the limit of my suggestins :)
