Probably backuppc isn't complaining about "no ping" but about "slow ping".
The problem with wireless connections is that these are slooow. And wireless 
usually has higher latency, thats why backuppc checks the answer-time of the 
ping and then decides whether to treat the connection as slow or fast enough 
for backups.
Of course you can define what backuppc considers as slow by adjusting the 
corresponding value in the config/interface. Finding the value is left as an 
exercise to the reader...
