Would the below do? 

[root@cyndane ~]# yes | pv | ssh titan "cat > /dev/null"
1.16GiB 0:01:29 [14.3MiB/s]

[root@cyndane ~]#

I searched and read som more after posting the question, and I realize it's not 
that simple fixing this, as I initially thought...
