I don't think that is the problem. There are directories with many files on all servers, not just the one that fails. Besides, the backup does not fail on a full backup, and the same server did not use to fail before. Also, on a number of occasions a manual backup under the same circumstances succeeds. Not always, recently a manual failed too.

But also, last night the incremental backup on the failing server has succeeded with no intervention by me.

I will try to upgrade the backup server to Ubuntu 18.04 (from 16.04) soon. Sadly, BackupPC v4 has not arrived in the official repository yet and I prefer to stick to stock packages if possible.
