I run an HP DL160G6se with hardware RAID and 7200RPM LFF SAS, with dual power supplies & SSD for OS.

Backing up 34 linux hosts with a pool of 10.8TB prior to pooling & compression. It typically stays busy 24/7 between backups & pool cleanup, etc.

How spec’d out do you make your backup server machines, as in the ones running your backup software to backup the production servers?  Are they barely above desktop class?  Software RAID or still require hardware RAID?  Still SAS drives or do you go SATA and expect to replace them?  Hot swappable or do you just expect to take down the machine?  Dual power supplies or just a single as its the backup server?

Thanks,

Greg Harris
