I think they were caused by the fact that some of the perl modules eg BackupPC::XS and SCGI got removed during the upgrade to the operating system and I had to manually re-install them - interestingly the Debian Package installation did not automatically add them back in. The log file was the one pointed to in the config.pl - in my case it's in: '/var/log/BackupPC/LOG'.
