Some years ago when I needed to do this for a small company with v3
where rsync would not have worked, I put backuppc on a raid1 mirror
and swapped one of the drives weekly, breaking the mirror and
re-syncing. I had a dual-boot laptop set up that could mount the
removed drive in a usb enclosure. Access would have been slow but I
would have been able to grab copies of any files while rebuilding
something better. Later that company was acquired by a larger
company and then I switched to simply running two instances of
backuppc in different locations, adding the targets one at a time to
get through the slow initial backup runs and using blackout times to
keep from hitting the same target at the same time. We had dedicated
connections between sites but I would have used a VPN if that had not
been available. I think completely independent systems are the best
approach even if you could rsync the main system's copy. That way you
cover any kind of failure.
