I will definitely look into it further.  Especially as you seem to
be saying that I cannot expect to be able to restore a directory.

Not *quite* what I'm saying.  I'm just saying that in the docs at

https://backuppc.github.io/backuppc/BackupPC.html#BackupPC-Introduction

the rsync transfer method is omitted from the (very short) list of
transfer methods which are said to be able to restore directly to the
client.  It may just be an omission in the docs, but I wouldn't want
to bet against the docs without looking into it carefully.  Back in
April the contributor who replied to you said that using the UI he was
able to restore the contents of a directory by marking the directory,
and he didn't have to mark the contents.  A couple of days ago when I
tried it here that was my experience too.

I don't know what you mean by "mark the contents".
I'll see if I can get some deeper logs.

Almost always a good idea. ;)

The BackupPC host is running rsync 3.5 and most of the remote hosts
are running rsync 3.2.5.

Then it doesn't look like that's the problem.  BackupPC itself doesn't
use the rsync that's installed on the BackupPC host.  To communicate
with the rsyncs on the clients it only uses rsync-bpc.  For security I
do recommend upgrading rsync on all your clients, although I doubt it
will have any effect on the current issue.

It's not something silly like permissions on the directory is it?

Unlikely. The entire repo is owned by backuppc.

I'll see if I can update the clients to rsync 3.5.

Emmett
