I'm retired now but back when I relied on it I always kept a VM installed on a laptop that could have restored files from the real system's raid1 array or a single mirror volume that was swapped regularly in an emergency. Seems like these days a docker image would make it easier to keep a spare copy as well as maintaining the working system across system updates or even drastic changes.
Well I don't know what's official about any of this :) but I'd be very happy to add e.g. a couple of files in a directory called Docker/ or something ilke that. I use Docker all the time for testing. It runs an instance of BackupPC on a laptop in my office. It doesn't serve the whole network, but it's been so stable for the past year or so there might come a time when it does. I'm also running a QEMU VM which does much the same thing just to test a different architecture. Compared to using Docker, setting that up was a substantial effort. The things I like about Docker are that there's so little text to send if you want to give a copy to someone, and apart from a one-off job of installing Docker itself, there's so little to do to spin up the VM. As M. Adnet points out if you want to keep the VM bang up to date that can be a lot of work, but I guess most don't worry too much about it. The other downside I suppose is that configuring the VM to have a non- volatile store for data can be a bit fiddly but you do only have to do that once. No mention of BackupPC on Docker could be complete without mention of github/adferrand, I tried to get a link but Github doesn't seem to be responding to me just at the moment. This link (from a tab I already had open) might help: https://github.com/backuppc/backuppc/issues/559 -- 73, Ged. _______________________________________________ BackupPC-users mailing list [email protected] List: https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/backuppc-users Wiki: https://github.com/backuppc/backuppc/wiki Project: https://backuppc.github.io/backuppc/
