The SQL engine can always reorder records. However, the tree structure (directory, subdirectory, ...) should always be maintained. Plenty of scope for crashes there. If you do figure out some > definitive steps leading up to the crash them please do post them. Another way to help test for resource problems would be to do one operation (backup or restore) then restart the FD and do a second operation, and so on. If it works, after shutting down and restarting, then as James says, it is probably a resource problem. The Microsoft API is often very tricky in that regard and the documention not very explicit.
