hmm... i could't figure out what the problem was. Debian considers files 
on /etc as conffiles - maybe the emtpy one existed and got not updated 
with the "new" one from 5.0.0 (as it is intended to not overwrite it) - 
IMHO another reason to initialize the defaults in the main-script. 

another argument to include a default values initialization in the main 
script: maybe somebody deletes a line in mtx-changer.conf and then screws 
up the main script because of the missing line.
