I think that you missed one important thing about floss projects: if this is an important issue for you, you should develop this feature. Kern say that this is not an important issue (and i agree with that), but i think that if you develop this feature in the right way, Kern will merge it in the official branch. This is "do ocracy" and it's an important part of floss projects.
