I take that back:  I just checked and --enable-smartalloc is set by
default in the ebuild.  I'm just going to do an ebuild configure and
verify that it does get configured that way...


...And it does, by default already.

Configuration on Tue Jun 23 14:01:27 EDT 2020:

I did not have smartalloc enabled on my sd on Solaris 11.3, but am
rebuilding it right this minute.
