So, they are readable by user bacula. I changed this already earlier today, when I expected this to be the problem after noticing that rpmnew-conf files had this group/rights setting. Anyway, it didn't help, didn't make director to start.
SD did start as user bacula, but it couldn't access the tape drive. So, to make things work in a quick and dirty way, I changed them both to run as user root, this is the way how previous binary rpm packages in Sourceforge had been built. This is a decent workaround, at least safe enough for my environment, although running as non-root would be nice. My FC4 install in question is less than a month old, with a minimum amount of any changes made, so it reflects quite well a pure FC4 where *fc4.rpm could be expected to run as such. For now, 1.38.3 is beta and it's understandable that there may be things to fix. However, building a binary rpm from a source rpm with build_fc4 option doesn't now produce a working rpm for FC4, so from my point of view there is something that needs developer attention, although this is not an urgent matter.
