thanks for your advice. I don't think you ever got to see the full
log - long posts seem to get chopped off at a certain point. However
your comment about the existence of /dev/fd was the key. It really
didn't exist on my clean install of Mandrake, so I created it linking to
/proc/self/fd and now a full backup of about 5gb to DVD-RW worked first
time!
