I think I am going to try Dan's suggestion of setting the sparse file configuration parameter. /var/log/lastlog is the file that contains all the data from when you run the lastlog command (it displays the last time users logged into the system). I am running CentOS 4.3 which is a RHEL4 clone. I do not know if it is part of other distros. A du on the file shows that in reality it is only 64K. Anyway, thanks for everyone's help.
