I think I found it:
Feb 14 17:29:55 epohost kernel: (scsi0:A:2:0): No or incomplete CDB sent to 
device.
Feb 14 17:29:55 epohost kernel: scsi0: Issued Channel A Bus Reset. 1 SCBs 
aborted

This was exactly at the time the tape rewound.

Yes, I realised that. I am working at separating the devices from the tape 
device. There is one old CD-burner that I can throw away. The scanner also has 
a 
USB interface to which I can conver as soon as I've ditched my old OS/2 system 
and the last device - a negative film scanner - is used so seldom that it 
doesn't matter.
