For what it's worth I use VSS, NTBackup, and USMT to give myself the most
flexibility with restores. I also used setacl when I had to restore a XP Home
backup into a XP Pro installation (just user data). Later I played with wpkg
for automatic software installation, etc. so I can install a base system, let
it install the apps automatically, then restore the user data.
This is probably a 101 type question, but does anyone know how to re-create a
UUID (isn't that what it's called?) for a user? I used setacl to change the
ownership recursively once I re-created the user ID on the PC and restored the
data. If the PC is a member of a Windows domain (XP Home **technically** can't
join a domain) I wouldn't have to worry about that, right?
Thanks in advance.

I think it depends on what you're trying to backup. I'm not really a
Windows backup person, but my understanding is that NTBackup is better
at writing out what it calls a "system state" than other ways. Perhaps
if you never intend to need to restore that without restoring the full
PC, that does not matter... but if I were backing up a windows box, I
think I'd do that anyway, in case I wanted to restore that independently
(not sure how one would do that otherwise -- I'd not be clear on what to
restore).
