Only 21% of people know that 2009 is Darwin's anniversary year,
according to a new poll published by Theos today, on the 149th
anniversary of the publication of the Origin of Species.
2009 will see a double Darwin anniversary: 12 February marks the
200th anniversary of Darwin's birth. On 24 November, the 150th
anniversary of the publication of the Origin of Species will be commemorated.
The finding of the ComRes poll coincides with the unveiling by Theos
and the Faraday Institute on Science and Religion of a programme of
major events and publications to 'rescue' Darwin from the crossfire
of a philosophical battle in which he had little personal interest.
