On the CodeProject blog someone wonders why Windows 7 is called Windows 7.
There were many more numbers in the Microsoft Windows history since Windows 3.x
(who remembers the Windows 3 disk that you had to start from the DOS box?).
And argues that Win95 was 4.0, Win98 4.1 and WinME 4.2 - for which one paid
"new version" prices each.
Well, besides that this precedent was really set in the Win95 to WinME era, he
is wrong. Windows 7 in fact shows WinVer version 6.1 - officially to preserve
application compatibility to Windows Vista - same as Windows 2008 Server
(6.1.7600).
