Dear Marleen,

Many of His contemporaries had a great deal of admiration for the
Enlightenment. Abdu'l-Baha could have chosen to adopt their view.

The Enlightenment and those associated with it,
> when
> studied in detail and as individuals, reveal a much greater
> diversity of
> thought and cannot all be reduced to the simplistic stereotype of
> glorifying nature and reason at the expense of religion.

> complete rejection of religion.

Voltaire and his colleagues had little use for clerics whether they
were corrupt or not, and hence they had little use for organized
religion. And their rejection of authority tended to make them reject
revelation as well. When they believed in God it was a god they knew
through nature and reason, not revelation. Was Abdu'l-Baha over-
generalizing? Of course He was! A work of this type which treats the
Enlightenment in a space of a few sentences has to do that.

warmest, Susan
