You assume I've read the book.
It's short fiction.
Beyond the obvious of wanting to tell a good story and make some
money, I'ld say it's a social commentary on the passing of the simple
life in the south with the advent in the late 1800's of
mechanization, in this case of the timber industry. but I haven't
read it in a lo-ong time.
