gilberto,
:"I'm honestly not sure what you mean."
 then we agree...:-)
;"engage "the demand side" of mathematics education
reform"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebra_Project
ok.. what is the demand? that demand is based on perceptions of roi and roa
achieavable under certain defined risk/reward acceptance.
to use ian's response to ur japanese reataurtant, one weighs the risk of
being arested for stealing menus vs getting nourished. in the 1960's charles
armstrong of the chicago public school system gave up teaching over the issue
of "relevance." and instead became a newspaper owner publisher until he was
murdered, working to change was what signified by possession of certain skills.
within the terms of this discussion, armstrong worked to deconstruct the
images of what is "meant" by success, power, self-actualisation. that might be
terms iconoclasm. i have already noted to ian that derrida states there are
limits to deconstuction, with that limit having something to do with forward
motion.
i would offer that concretely, a definition of "cool" has to be
deconstructed, to make room for another one, in the mind of anyone, at any
time. this is "image adjustment." i don;t find myself out on some psycho-babble
limb, or some bit of tenrdiness here. i find it directly in the idea of twin
process of decay and attraction conintually dancing, forming the world view.
i would offer that relevance in math involves deconstructing an image of math
literacy. that may be iconoclasm at the politcal level, but i beleive at the
heart level it means deconstructing layter after layer of association and
assumption. and that telling people to do it is counter-productive and
counter0intuitive. attgracting people to it, as the sun does when training a
tree, cuases the tree to act, and turn sunlight into tree.
derrida appears to me to be saying, once we remove the battle of the titans
b movie quality that imho forms much of intellectualism, that the ways in which
we historically justify many approaches to image formation as "natural" are in
reality only culutral constructs, and we need to coninutallly subvert the
supposed understanding until there is none left from which to make a fasle
choice. new choices will then be made, some of which will certainly be wrong,
but forward motion will again begin.
but then, i see myself as a post-deconstructionist, within this taxonomy.
or put another way, if i can find in derrida, rand, or cowboy bebop something
that will represent in the mind of an 11-14 yoa the tools for aligning with The
Higher, then they have meaning. if not, then they are tales told by idiots,
filled with sound and fury, signifying nothing.
