They did acknowledge a vague supreme
Deity, called Allah; but they joined partners with Him, lesser
deities called al ilahat -- the goddesses; Muhammad's teaching was
La ilaha illa'llah -- There is no ilah but Allah. This reminds us of
Acts 17:23: "Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I
unto you." George Sale in his "Preliminary Discourse" tells of one
tribe who even worshipped a lump of dough, but he says they treated
it with more respect than some Christians do theirs, because they
would not eat it unless compelled to by famine.

but imho the sense that aligns more with what i see is this
Yet they made the ginn partners with God, though He created them! and they
ascribed to Him sons and daughters, though they have no knowledge; celebrated
be His praise! and exalted be He above what they attribute to Him!

On the day when He shall say, 'Call ye my partners whom ye pretend:' and they
shall call on them, but they shall not answer them; and we will set the vale of
perdition between them; and the sinners shall see the fire, and shall think
that they are going to fall therein, and shall find no escape therefrom.

30 There doth every soul experience that which it did aforetime, and they are
returned unto Allah, their rightful Lord, and that which they used to invent
hath failed them.

35 Say: Is there of your partners (whom ye ascribe unto Allah) one that leadeth
to the Truth ? Say: Allah leadeth to the Truth. Is He Who leadeth to the Truth
more deserving that He should be followed, or he who findeth not the way unless
he (himself) be guided. What aileth you ? How judge ye ?
36 Most of them follow not but conjecture. Assuredly conjecture can by no means
take the place of truth. Lo! Allah is Aware of what they do.

They serve Me. They ascribe no thing as partner unto Me.

"This hath befallen you, for that when One God was proclaimed to you, ye
believed not: but when partners had been united with him, ye believed: But
judgment belongeth unto God, the High, the Great."
(The Qur'an (Rodwell tr), Sura 40 - The Believer)
i would offer that the problem now is the manmade idols attempting to displace
the Ilahat, Who at least were Made by the One, and as Her companions, circle
the Throne.
