In terms of 5 vs. 3, both Sunnis and Shia pray fajr, zuhr, asr, maghrib and isha. Hanafis are generally strict and mostly insist that each prayer only should be offered in its time. Other Sunnis are more liberal and say that nder certain circumstances (for example, if you are traveling) there is permission to combine certain prayers (e.g. pray zuhr and then asr during the time period for one of them). Similarly one might pray maghrib and isha during the time of one of them.) *** Shias are much more liberal about this issue and seem to allow for combination with little or no excuse. So they may make 3 "prayer breaks" out of their day but they are still doing 5 distinct prayers.*** Dear Gilberto Of course in one level what you write is good and perfect but when you really study deeply Shi'ism you will find that those who truly believe in Shi'ism go beyond times of prayer etc and they believe that with the Martyrdom of the Imam Husayn [takbeer wa tahleel] were slain and destroyed. They also believe as they write on their websites That because the Prophet of Godhad said that Husaym is from Me and I am from H.usayn, as a result of His Martyrdom, then prayer, tasbeeh. (God's glorification), the fast all were killed ( حسين مني وأنا من حسين ) قتلوا الصلاة والصيام والتكبير والتهليل والتسبيح الذي جاء به جده المصطفى جاءوا برأسك يا ابن بنت محمد -------- متزملا بدمائه تزميلا و كأنما بك يا ابن بنت محمد ---------- قتلوا جهارا عامدين رسولا قتلوك عطشانا و لم يترقبوا ----------- في قتلك التنزيل و التأويلا و يكبرون بأن قتلت و إنما ----------- قتلوا بك التكبير و التهليلا if one can read Arabic you will see it written here that by slaying Thee They qataluu (= ie they killed) at-takbeer wa at tahleel and if one pauses to reflect one realizes why it is so essential to uphold the Covenant and Testament of God in this Day of Unity and In-gathering [yawm ul jam'] as the Holy Qur'an calls it. also the episode of placing the Holy Qur'an impaled on spears to interrupt the course of the battle comes to mind with love for you and your thoughts __________________________________________________ You are subscribed to Baha'i Studies as: mailto:[email protected] Unsubscribe: send a blank email to mailto:[email protected] Subscribe: send subscribe bahai-st in the message body to [email protected] Or subscribe: http://list.jccc.edu:8080/read/all_forums/subscribe?name=bahai-st Baha'i Studies is available through the following: Mail - mailto:[email protected] Web - http://list.jccc.edu:8080/read/?forum=bahai-st News (on-campus only) - news://list.jccc.edu/bahai-st Old Public - http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected] New Public - http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]
