The Baha'i Studies Listserv
Dear Steve,
I know there are references to 'meditation' in the Writings. What I'm
saying is that every time I've gone back to look at the text the
original word used was fikr rather than muraqaba as you suggested. I'm
now asking those whose language skills are better than mine if they
know of any instances where the term muraqaba is used in our Writings.
Certainly using a mantra as is done in Hinduism and Buddhism has
similarities to dhikr which we do have in the Baha'i Faith, but I
don't think there is any equivalent to tantric. Of course tantric yoga
involves ritually engaging in activities that would ordinarily be
forbidden such as sex or drinking alcohol or eating forbidden meats.
But Baha'u'llah seems rather skeptical of extreme austerity as well:
How many a man hath secluded himself in the climes of India,
denied himself the things that God hath decreed as
lawful, imposed upon himself austerities and mortifications,
and hath not been remembered by God, the Revealer of Verses.
(Baha'u'llah, The Kitab-i-Aqdas, p. 31)
warmest, Susan
