The Baha'i Studies Listserv There is a dif between an authoritarian society and a society that has some authoritarian policies:
They are ranked as such: Full damocracy Flawed democracy Hybrid regime Authoritarian regime Clearly totalitarian regime A society is ranked according to the net value of all it's policies. Flawed democracies can have some authoritarian policies and authoritarian regimes can have some democractice policies. England has a state religion but it does not seek to impose Anglicanism on its subjects or rule the country in accordance with either biblical or canon law. Instead, pluralism is explicitly embraced. This is not what the Reconstructionalists propose. I would say that it most definitely would be oppressive to allow parents to declare their children obstinate and have them stoned to death as the Old Testament allows and as Gary North's father-in-law Roshdoony endorses. Decentralized governments are not necessarily any less oppressive than centralized ones. On the contrary, in our own country it has been the champions of so-called 'states rights' who have used this as an excuse to deprive people of their most basic human rights. And by the way, the Reconstructionalists also support reintroducing slavery.
