Dear Owen,

This could be the subject of an interesting study. It has to be carefully
designed and based on good quality survey data. Also, it has to be done in
such a way that folks feel safe and secure to share their true feelings.
That is, if a person asked publicly what they thought, very likely they
will just repeat the official position. Whereas, an anonymous survey could
to do a better job of capturing the true sentiments of the community. This
requires good planning.
I think this is an important issue because I don't think we do such a good
job maintaining our human resources. We try very hard to bring folks into
the Faith, we stay with them initially, and then throw them into the
community and let them sink or swim. Often they sink.
A solid study on this subject could gauge the degree of people's feelings,
stratified by various demographic indicators (e.g. sex, race, age, years of
affiliation with the Faith, etc), and provide the Institutions solid data
to act on. By acting I don't mean "Allow women on the House". Rather, for
the Institutions to develop appropriate communications to deepen and
comfort the friends on this issue. Incidentally, there is plenty of
anecdotal evidence to suggest that such a step should be considered by the
Institutions anyway.
Thanks,
ahang.
