I was under the impression that Sikhs have also long believed and championed the equality of men and women. Am I mistaken in that impression, or is the qualifier that there was no equivocal statement by Guru Nanak, or is Sikhism not considered to be an independent religion? Thoughts anyone?
Dear Jeanine,
There are statements in Guru Ganth which point towards the spiritual equality of women and men, just as there are in Christianity and Islam. But I've read nothing in the scriptures that indicates their social equality. And there is a lot of rather misogynists stuff in their scriptures as well. The usual stuff pointing to women as temptresses.
warmest, Susan
