General Sir,
I have read with interest the discussions you have had concerning the awards
earned by the Third Foot over the last few months. While I understand your
consternation, I hope that you remember the initial comments were made in a
letter sent to the members of the Third Foot. Such a missive must, by its
very nature, show the units of the brigade in a positive light in order to
increase morale. Over the past few months at the front I have seen how
important the morale of the troops is to a successful campaign. Brigade
commanders, all of whom I'm confident are wiser than me, certainly see the
importance in this.
