Colonel le d'Erring informs me that you claim to be completely unaware of
what regimental protocols you may be in breach of, and asks if you have ever
been made aware of the protocol in question.
Allow me to refresh your memory. At the end of May, my last month as CO of
the regiment, I sent a general message to all members of the Dragoon Guards.
The following is an extract from this.
"Whatever happens, I would like to congratulate Baron le Vair, as senior [ie
longest serving] captain, on his imminent Majority (though I would hope that
he would remain as Regimental Adjutant at least until we return to Paris,
since his
unquestioned talents in this area will be sorely needed over the next few
months) and Subaltern du Pain on his imminent Captaincy. If either of you
gentlemen might require any financial assistance in these matters, please
feel free to call upon me at Brigade HQ."
What the regimental protocol is in these matters is spelled out quite
clearly above - the senior captain gets any vacant majority. You breached
regimental protocol by purchasing the majority yourself immediately after
receiving the above and, to my mind, you are forturnate that Colonel
d'Erring did not also levy a fine regarding ingnoring a specific directive
from your commanding officer.
