Chevalier de Penmarch,
Many thanks for your most
generous and quite unexpected gift. It is so rare these days to find another
connoisseur of refinement and taste.
I had hoped perhaps to call upon you
during the previous month. Regrettably the only place that I was told that you
would attend was the funeral of the dearly departed Colonel Pas de Problem. As I
never met the esteemed gentleman while he lived, I felt it would be presumptuous
of me to attend his wake.
Perhaps I will see you at Baron
d'Eau's Grand Ball. I have already commissioned a tailor and milliner to prepare
my costume. Borrowing a theme from the heraldic shield of my family, I shall be
masked as a Unicorn in white satin.
I have recently acquired some
bottles of a somewhat peculiar wine made from citrus fruits. However, given the
current situation in the Netherlands, I fear that it will be some time until
Orange is fashionable in the salons of Paris again.
