Needless to say, I would be honoured to serve as your second in your
forthcoming affair with de Custaad.
Lucy's taking up with him came as something of a shock to both the Princess
and myself, as for a long time she blamed the shame of commanding the
regiment at the time of de Custaad's first flaunting Dragoon Guards'
regulations for her former husband's loss of interest the doings of the
Court and eventual retirement from public life. I had hoped that the
sanctions imposed by Colonel d'Erring in the wake of that sorry affair would
have been sufficient to encourage de Custaad to behave in a more gentlemanly
fashion in the future. This appeared to be case for a time - but it seems
now that appearances can be deceptive.
Do you think that you own current lack of either a military or civil
appointment may have been a factor in Lucy's abandoning you? The ladies do
like to feel that thier influence over their consorts might have some
bearing on national events. I have been urging His Grace le Duc von Fersen
to appoint you as Intendant for War for some time, but with no success I
fear. Perhaps a direct approach from yourself might meet with more success?
