From: Duc Axel von Fersen, Minister of State
To: His Majesty the King

 Your Majesty,

as Your Majesty knows we have had reasons to believe there is a traitor in the government for some time now. The Commissioner of Public Safety, Vicomte Zilvain, has made a thorough investigation and provided evidence that the traitor is none other than the foreign minister, Otto Chabot. All the details of the case have been thoroughly investigated and there is no doubt about that he is in fact the traitor we have been searching for. Indeed he has not even disputed that he is guilty.

Death would be too mild a punishment for a traitor to the crown. Also we need to persuade him to tell us if there were any other traitors involved. Therefore he has been imprisoned in the lowest dungeon of the Bastille where he will have time to contemplate his sins. Since we don't want to reveal to the people of France that such a scoundrel could get so close to Your Majesty we will make no public announcement about this. The only thing that will be revealed is that the foreign minister due to health reasons has had to withdraw from public life, and that Vicomte Zilvain will take his place for the time being.

Your devoted servant

Duc Axel von Fersen
Minister of State
